Respite care is usually a short term, temporary arrangement that can be provided in a nursing home, assisted living or in an individual’s home.
In need of respite or break
When a caregiver is in need of respite or break, arrangements are made for their loved one to be admitted to either a nursing home or assisted living facility for a period of several days to several weeks, depending upon the need.
Handle care giving responsibilities
Respite at home can be arranged by hiring healthcare staff to either live-in or spend several hours a day in the home to handle care giving responsibilities. Â Â
County programs offer a respite benefit
Respite care is not covered by Medicare or medical insurance. Some county programs offer a respite benefit. Contact your local Area Agency on Aging to see if you qualify.
Ensuring appropriate care
Our practice can help to organize this service. We recommend that families are proactive and have a respite plan in place to ensure appropriate and adequate care when needed.
